What are SAT Subject Tests (formerly SAT II)?

Students take the Subject Tests to demonstrate to colleges their mastery of specific subjects like English, history, mathematics, science, and language. Many colleges use the Subject Tests for admission, for course placement, and to advise students about course selection. Some colleges specify the Subject Tests they require for admission or placement; others allow applicants to choose which tests to take.

Should I take Subject Tests, and which ones?

Before deciding which tests to take, make a list of the colleges you're considering. Then review school catalogs, College Search Engines, or College Handbooks to find out whether the schools require scores for admission and, if so, how many tests and in which subjects.

When should I take Subject Tests?

Most students take Subject Tests toward the end of their junior year or at the beginning of their senior year.

Take tests such as World History, Biology E/M, Chemistry, or Physics as soon as possible after completing the course in the subject, while the material is still fresh in your mind. For foreign language tests, you'll do better after at least two years of study.

Should I take the ACT plus Writing?

It is highly recommended that all university bound students take the ACT plus Writing. Although not all are requiring yet due to insufficient knowledge about interpreting the scores, many universities this year are requiring the writing, and sometimes in place of an admissions essay.

It is not yet required for the Bright Futures scholarship, but it could possibly be next year. It is recommended that all juniors (class of 2010) take the ACT plus Writing in the event that the writing will be required for Bright Futures.

Where is it given?

Ridge Community High School now offers ACT testing for the October, December, February, and April Tests!! Testing is also available at Polk State College in Winter Haven, or Haines City High School, if available.
